Announcing The Thirteenth Annual
Interactive Audio Conference and BBQ

October 16-19, 2008, Canyon of the Eagles
Lake Buchanan, Texas

Project Bar-B-Q  is a conference to bring together a group of smart people (The Bar-B-Q Group), solidify their opinions, and put to good use the combined skills of those people for the good of the manufacturers, developers, and primarily the consumers of computer audio products.

A conference to generate sources of positive action and influence upon the computer audio industry as represented by the MMA, the IASIG, and the AES, and the other various individuals and corporations who participate in computer audio.

Because of the dynamic nature of this industry, workgroup topics are chosen by a unique brainstorming session on the conference's first day.  This gives all present a chance to steer the direction of the powerful Bar-B-Q Group, and to simultaneously benefit from immediate feedback and input from the other remarkable attendees.  As in years past, the only official topic announced before the conference is, "Influencing Audio Hardware and Software Over The Next 5 Years."

2008 Update:

BBQ 2007 once again proved that the great minds of this industry, given the proper collaborative environment, can design a better world for the producers and consumers of computer audio. The camaraderie, altruism, and tireless effort at this conference are unparalleled.

Significant accomplishments were made, particularly in the areas of

  • An examination and prioritization of approximately 40 audio problems facing the PC today.
  • A look at social, cultural and technical developments molding the next major evolution of audio products and communications technologies.
  • An evaluation the current state of interactive audio for games and a discussion of what can be done to accelerate the evolution and adoption of advanced interactive audio techniques.
  • An examination of some existing audio metadata schemas and a proposal for a highly distributed metadata system.
  • Game audio concepts and guidelines for the development process that game designers and producers should use in early stages of product development.
  • An exploration of designs for a non-intrusive UI extensions to existing interfaces and instruments
  • A proposal for a totally configurable interface designed to replace standard input devices

As one attendee put it, "Everything from the high class of attendee, inspirational pep talks, convivial atmosphere, great food and drink and the carrot-and-stick facilitation, to the beautiful ranch and their ultra-personable staff are the right things to set up a magic experience, and so it happens."

For the 2008 conference, come well-rested. You will, as usual, spend from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM formally discussing and directing the future of audio on computers via speaker sessions, roundtables, and breakout groups. Discussions will continue, informally, around dinner and the campfire well into the night.

We are looking forward to seeing you at this year's conference!

ORGANIZER'S NOTE:  PLEASE get your registration forms in early. For productivity's sake we limit the conference to a maximum of 50 attendees. If you know of someone who must be at this event, please pass this information on to him or her.
